a month ago, ben and i talked about hating joyce carol oates. i said i didn't like her limited portrait of teenage girls and ben said something really smart about how that's what happens when you write from retrospect. today in the checkout line, alex and i talked about people who seemed so big in some ancient era who we can now nail down in a sentence that's true but worthless.
